As the weather becomes more and more spring-like, it is once again time to enjoy the outdoors. Spending a day outdoors is an inexpensive way to spend quality family time. Just an hour drive from Jacksonville, in Palatka, there is Ravine Gardens State Park. And the good news is, it is right now is a great time to go! Ravine Gardens was created thousands of years ago by water flowing from the St. Johns River. These waters created a gorge that was turned into a garden in 1933 by the Works Progress Administration. Today, the trail system that was laid out and the formal gardens planted remain, and a 1.8 mile paved rim trail is great for bike, stroller, and wheelchair access. The ravine is famous for its blooming azaleas, which bloom until late April. There are also suspension bridges and springs that are sure to delight kids.
